INFORMATION ABOUT SELECTED FACULTY COMMITTEES, 2009-2010

GENERAL FACULTY STANDING COMMITTEES

FACULTY SENATE STANDING COMMITTEES
COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND TENURE
Time Commitment:
Meets 1-2 times a year. Cases involving hearings may run one or more full days and require a written report.
Membership: Twelve tenured/continuing members of the General Faculty other than deans, elected annually by the General Faculty for staggered 3-year terms.
Functions: Conducts hearings on recommendations for dismissal or suspension and other grievances/complaints by faculty members.

COMMITTEE OF ELEVEN
Time Commitment:
Meets every other Friday afternoon.
Membership: Ten members of the General Faculty, elected annually by the General Faculty for staggered 2-year terms plus Chair of the Faculty who is ex-officio and two student representatives.
Functions: Initiate, promote, and stimulate study and action toward solution of situations/problems of faculty concern; make reports to General Faculty or Faculty Senate.

COMMITTEE ON COMMITTEES
Time Commitment:
Meets first Friday of the month for an hour. Members then spend 1-2 hours a month soliciting faculty member nominees to serve on University-wide standing committees.
Membership: Six members of the General Faculty, two elected annually by the General Faculty for staggered 3-year terms.
Functions: Nominate faculty for election or appointment to numerous committees at request of Chair of the Faculty, Faculty Senate, President of University, or any administrator.

COMMITTEE ON CONCILIATION
Time Commitment:
Meets 1-2 times a year. Cases involve 2-3 hours of informal resolution procedures.
Membership: Six tenured/continuing members of the General Faculty other than deans; not more than one member from any college.  Members elected annually by Faculty Senate for 2-year staggered terms.
Functions: At request of President or any individual member of the General Faculty, attempt to bring about conciliation of disputes between faculty members and/or administrators.

COMMITTEE ON ELECTIONS
Time Commitment:
Meets approximated 3 times a year to verify petitions and read online election results.
Membership: Three members of the General Faculty, appointed annually by the Chair of the Faculty, for staggered 3-year terms.
Functions: Notify members of the General Faculty of elective offices to be filled each year; issue and receive nominating petitions and conduct elections for elective faculty offices according to Constitution/Bylaws. 

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON ETHICS & COMMITMENT
Time Commitment: Meets 1-2 times a year. Cases involve interviews totaling 3-5 hours and a written report.
Membership: Six members of the General Faculty elected annually by the Faculty Senate for staggered 3-year terms.
Functions: Receive reports from the Research Integrity Officer and consider questions of misconduct in research, scholarship or creative endeavor, or facilities misuse.

COMMITTEE ON FACULTY MEMBERSHIP
Time Commitment:
Meets 1-2 times a year.
Membership: Secretary of the Faculty and three members of the General Faculty appointed by the Chair of the Faculty in consultation with the Senate Executive Committee, for staggered 2-year terms.
Functions: Conduct and publish the annual Faculty Census and interpret the provisions of Article II of the Constitution and Article I of its Bylaws.

. FACULTY SENATE
Time Commitment:
Meets first Monday of the month, September-May.
Membership: 49 members of the General Faculty elected either as College (29) or At-Large representatives (20) for two-year terms, plus ten ex-officio members and seven student representatives.
Functions: Acts on motions forwarded by Senate standing committees about curricula and degrees, academic and research policies, academic personnel policies, honorary degrees and University policies and procedures. Hears monthly reports from President, Provost, faculty and student officers.

SENATE STANDING COMMITTEES (Bylaws VIII, 4) (APPC, RPC,SAPC)
Each Faculty Senate standing committee, except the Executive Committee, shall consist of seven General Faculty members, a majority of whom must be members of the Faculty Senate. Members of standing committees shall serve no more than three consecutive one-year terms, but they may be reappointed after an interim of one year.

ACADEMIC PERSONNEL POLICY COMMITTEE
Time Commitment:
Meets monthly as needed.
Membership: Seven members of the General Faculty (majority must be Senators), appointed by the Vice Chair of the Faculty in consultation with the Senate Executive Committee, plus two student representatives. 
Functions: Review and make recommendations on academic personnel policies and review annual report on promotion and tenure or continuing status.

RESEARCH POLICY COMMITTEE
Time Commitment: Meets monthly as needed.
Membership: Seven members of the General Faculty (majority must be Senators), appointed by the Vice Chair of the Faculty in consultation with the Senate Executive Committee, plus two student representatives.
Functions: Consider such matters as research policy, research parks, conflict of interest, data retention, intellectual property, patent policy, Arizona Research Laboratory, human and animal research, and safety.

STUDENT AFFAIRS POLICY COMMITTEE
Time Commitment: Meets monthly as needed.
Membership: Seven members of the General Faculty (majority must be Senators), appointed by the Vice Chair of the Faculty in consultation with the Senate Executive Committee, plus two student representatives.
Functions: Consider such matters as student quality of life, financial aid, Code of Academic Integrity, student comportment, admission and domicile classification, and recruitment and retention policies.

University-Wide Committees
with Shared Governance Participation

 

ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON HONORARY DEGREES
Time Commitment:
Meets two-three times a year in December or January as needed.
Membership: Seven members including the Secretary of the Faculty, a dean and five senior faculty members chosen by the Provost’s office serve staggered three-year terms.
Functions: Review nominations for all honorary degrees and advise President and Provost on the merits of the candidates.  

CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS COMMITTEE
Time Commitment:
Meets as needed, 1-2 times a year.
Membership: Six members of the General Faculty appointed by the Chair of the Faculty.
Functions: Propose revisions to the General Faculty Constitution and Bylaws and draft language as necessary for revisions proposed by other groups; also review or propose changes to the UHAP.  

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE FOR MONITORING LABOR AND HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES
Time Commitment: Meets monthly.
Membership: Seven faculty members nominated by the Committee on Committees and approved by the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, two student representatives, and one community member selected by the committee itself. Members shall serve for three-year renewable terms.
Functions: Provide recommendations to the President regarding labor and human rights issues as related to organizations pertinent to the University; carry out educational efforts, informing itself, the campus, and community at-large on issues pertinent to its mission. 

SENIOR AWARDS COMMITTEE
Time Commitment:
Meets twice a year as needed.
Membership: Seven members of the faculty, four in the fall for the Centennial Achievement Awards committees, and three in the Spring for the Senior (Robie, Nugent and Freeman) Awards committees. Faculty are appointed for a one-year term, but can serve multiple terms if they wish.
Functions: Review applications and interview students who will be awarded these senior awards given at the fall and spring Commencement ceremonies. 

“POOL”
Periodically the Provost and the President call on faculty governance for nominations to various committees that they must establish.  If you would be willing to serve on a special administrative or faculty governance committee, please sign up for “Pool.”

STRATEGIC PLANNING AND BUDGET ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SPBAC)
Time Commitment:
Meets weekly, July-June.
Membership: Includes six faculty elected by the General Faculty for staggered, 3-year terms, the Chair of SPBAC and three faculty selected jointly by the President and the Chair of the Faculty; the Chair of the Faculty; and ten other representatives of the administration, staff, and student body.
Functions:
Review budget and planning issues and submit recommendations to the Provost and the President; construct, review or submit recommendations on University’s Strategic Plan.

UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON CORPORATE RELATIONSHIPS
Time Commitment: Meets quarterly as needed.
Membership: General Faculty members (appointed by Chair of the Faculty), students, representatives of the Alumni Association, Budget Office, Economic Development Office, and Intercollegiate Athletics. Office of the General Council and Chair of the Faculty serve as advisors to the committee.
Functions: Advise the President about potential or changeable corporate relationships; review selected proposed agreements and justifications; advise the President prior to a decision about entering into corporate agreements.

UNIVERSITY HEARING BOARD
Time Commitment:
Meets as needed.
Membership: A pool of twelve faculty, twelve students, and five staff; Senate elects faculty representatives for 3-year staggered terms. Dean of Students Office selects members of the pool to form five-member panels for individual cases.
Functions: Hears cases involving violations of the Student Code of Conduct and the Code of Academic Integrity not settled by the Dean of the College; submits written recommendations to the Provost or appropriate Vice President of the University.
