Mar 3: 7pm - Iron Jawed Angels film with speaker Linda Lumsden
SBS Annex Conference Room
In honor of the anniversary of the D.C. suffrage parade riot, we will watch Iron Jawed Angels and have a discussion following with Linda Lumsden, author of a book on the D.C. suffrage parade riot and picket line. Iron Jawed Angels recounts for a contemporary audience a key chapter in U.S. history: in this case, the struggle of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. Focusing on the two defiant women, Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor), the film shows how these activists broke from the mainstream women's-rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women's voting rights in 1920. Breathing life into the relationships between Paul, Burns and others, the movie makes the women feel like complete characters instead of one-dimensional figures from a distant past.

Student Union Kiva Room
The aftermath of violence on a university campus leaves any community with unanswered questions about safety, university protocols and procedures. What are the resources available on this campus to help students showing signs of distress? The Dean of Students Office invites the campus community to attend an open discussion on addressing the needs of distressed students. Acknowledging the complexities and sensitive issues associated with working with distressed students, we have invited a panel of experts representing the Dean of Students office, Counseling and Psychological Services, Life and Work Connections, University Police, and the University Attorney‘s office.  Please plan to attend.   For more information about the panel, please contact Dr. Veda Kowalski, Associate Dean of Students at 621-7059.

Mar 12: 7pm - On the Edge film with Steev Hise
YWCA (525 North Bonita Avenue)
On The Edge is a documentary covering the brutal murders of hundreds of poor young women in the border town of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, murders that have been repeatedly ignored and unresolved by police and governments since 1993, despite the continued and persistent efforts of family members and activists to obtain justice for the victims. Rather than provide an easy, murder-mystery style solution to the crimes, the film sets out to explain the social, cultural, and economic factors that have created this situation where the killings can continue, and continue to go unpunished. In addition to explaining the circumstances, On The Edge situates the Juarez killings in the context of wider political and economic trends, showing the audience that this is not just an isolated phenomenon in one far-off city, but a glimpse at a nightmarish future for much of the world, unless something is done to prevent it. A discussion with the filmmaker and local feminist activists will follow.  Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Time to crank up the creativity meter. The University of Arizona’s annual “On Our Own Time” art exhibit featuring the works of incredibly talented UA staff and appointed personnel is gearing up. Join us this year and have your artwork displayed in a professional Gallery setting and evaluated by a juried team. If you aren’t the artistic type but happen to know your cubicle mate is either a maestro with the paintbrush or can comb a junkyard and come up with enough material to make an army of 6’ “found art” sculptures in a weekend, please encourage them to participate. To get an idea of previous submissions to On Our Own Time, pieces from last year’s show can be found online. Check them out. You’ll find oil and acrylic paintings, inkjet and digital photographs, old fenders and steel rendered into sculpture, mixed media, sandstone, pencil, charcoal/newsprint and wood intarsia, just to name a few.  More details on how to enter will be forthcoming soon. If you go to the web site http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq.  You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.  It is FREE and it only takes a second.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?  I sent mine, now you send one too!

Curb Auto Theft with the Watch Your Car Program:
It's Quick, Easy and FREE!

The Watch Your Car decal program is a free, voluntary program that vehicle owners enroll their vehicles with the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority. The vehicle is then entered into the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) database and participants receive decals for their front and rear windows. By displaying the decals, vehicle owners convey to law enforcement officials that their vehicle is not usually in use between the hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, when the majority of auto thefts occur. In addition, by enrolling in the Watch Your Car Program, vehicle owners also authorize law enforcement officials to stop their vehicle at any time during the day or night within one mile of the border, if there is a suspicion that the vehicle is being illegally operated.

If a police officer witnesses the vehicle in operation between these hours, they have the right to stop the vehicle and verify it is being legally operated by the rightful owner.

To register for the program online go to: https://www.aata.state.az.us/Watch_Your_Car/Info_Request/signup_request.html

Register by mail by downloading the form at: http://www.azwatchyourcar.com/pdfs/WYC%20-%20application%20form%20for%20website.pdf  Print it, fill it out and mail back.
