Feb 4: 5 – 6:30pm - Excited Electronic States in Carbon Nanotubes by Louis Brus
Integrated Learning Center, Room 140
The event will begin with a reception at 5pm followed by the seminar at 5:30pm.  The Department of Chemistry, and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics present Professor Louis Brus of the Chemistry Department at Columbia University.  We explore the fundamental nature and dynamics of excited electronic states in single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT).   Picosecond luminescence and photobleaching dynamics of SWNTs in micellar solution show that non-radiative Auger recombination is extremely fast.   When the tubes are wrapped with DNA, they show circular dichorism. Near infrared two photon luminescence excitation spectra quantitatively reveal the importance of excitons.   In order to characterize excited states in both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs at the single-tube level, we detect white-light Rayleigh scattering from individual tubes suspended over an open slit in a substrate. Finally, we discuss how short pieces of metallic SWNTs may be related to the Diffuse Interstellar Bands. For more information regarding the Eminent Scholar Series please visit

 Feb 5: 3-5:00 pm - Writer-Activist Simi Linton performs
Kiva Room in the Memorial Student Union

The Disability Studies Initiative and the Disability Resource Center are proud to announce a special performance by renowned scholar and activist Simi Linton.  While at the UA, Linton will be performing "My Body Politic: An Illustrated History" a multi-media presentation based on her memoir, My Body Politic, published in 2006. As narrator and tour guide, Linton embeds a personal story of the lived experience of disability within its social, political and artistic context.
Disabled people are everywhere these days - boarding airplanes, casting votes, commandeering the dance floor, performing on stage and screen--setting the terms of our participation in the world. But despite these recent gains, the 54 million disabled people in the United States encounter persistent discrimination and vast restrictions on their pleasures and freedoms. The American public needs a wake-up call. Thousands of disabled soldiers are returning home to towns and cities across America that are poorly prepared to integrate them into the social and economic life of the community. "My Body Politic: An Illustrated History" takes you to the front lines of the ongoing political struggles and introduces pioneering actors, dancers
and writers forging a new kind of art. It provides a new point of view on the disability experience and a way to move forward toward a more inclusive and equitable society. As a writer, consultant and public speaker, Simi Linton is one of America's foremost experts on disability and the arts. She works with a diverse range of cultural organizations theatre companies, film and  television producers, museums, non-profit arts organizations, universities, and other groups across the country to improve and increase the way  disability is represented and depicted in all art forms."  Dr. Linton received a PhD in Counseling Psychology from New York University. A Switzer Distinguished Fellowship enabled her to complete her first book, Claiming Disability: Knowledge and Identity (1998), which is widely used in university courses in women's studies, disability studies, and cultural studies.  Linton will be performing in the Kiva Room in the Memorial Student Union on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, from 3:00-5:00 PM. Her performance is free and open to the public.

Feb 18: 1-2:30pm - Evolutionary Theory & Consumption seminar
Catalina Room, Student Union

Dr. Gad Saad, an evolutionary consumer psychologist, will discuss the key points of his recently released book, The Evolutionary Bases of Consumption.  It is the first academic work to demonstrate the intricate links between evolutionary theory and consumption. The book posits that (1) numerous consumption acts can be mapped onto four Darwinian modules (survival, reproductive, kin, and reciprocity), (2) the contents of cultural products (e.g., advertising images, song lyrics and music videos, movie and television themes, self-help books, etc.) are manifestations of our evolved biological heritage, and (3) various forms of dark-side consumption (e.g., pathological gambling or compulsive buying) possess a Darwinian etiology.  Dr. Saad will also discuss some of the ongoing and recently completed empirical projects within this research stream including the relationship between men’s testosterone levels and conspicuous consumption, the effects of the menstrual cycle on consumption phenomena, and an exploration of sequential choice models as applied to the ultimate of all consumption choices – mate choice. Gad Saad is an Associate Professor of Marketing at Concordia University (Montreal, Canada). He received a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science and an M.B.A. from McGill University and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Cornell University. He has published almost 40 scientific works, many of which lie at the intersection of evolutionary psychology and a broad range of disciplines including medicine (OCD and suicide), behavioral game theory, marketing, advertising, and consumer behavior.  RSVP to Annette Garcia at amgarcia@email.arizona.edu

Feb 29 - Mar 1 - Frontiers in Information Technology and Applications (FITA'08)
The Management Information Systems Department at the Eller College would like to announce an outreach conference to be held on February 29 and March 1, 2008. The formal name of the event is the Arizona Exposium on Frontiers in Information Technology and Applications (FITA'08), as described at http://fita2008.ecom.arizona.edu.  This event will provide a forum for business leaders, faculty, and students to exchange ideas on new IT problems and solutions, particularly in such frontier areas as service-oriented computing, business intelligence, security, online marketing, collaboration technologies, etc. This event is not a conventional academic conference because it is designed to attract a balanced mix of industrialists, academia, and students.  We call this event an "exposium" since it is between an expo, which mainly draws people from the industry, and a symposium, which mainly attracts people from academic institutions.  That is, Exposium = Expo + Symposium.  Please let your colleagues know about the outreach event; we are actively pursuing faculty and students outside the MIS department to consider participating in the event.

Send your thanks to our soldiers.
It only takes a minute and is so worthwhile.

If you go to the web site http://www.letssaythanks.com/ you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq.  You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services.  It is FREE and it only takes a second.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if the soldiers received a bunch of these?  I sent mine, now you send one too!

Curb Auto Theft with the Watch Your Car Program:
It's Quick, Easy and FREE!

The Watch Your Car decal program is a free, voluntary program that vehicle owners enroll their vehicles with the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority. The vehicle is then entered into the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) database and participants receive decals for their front and rear windows. By displaying the decals, vehicle owners convey to law enforcement officials that their vehicle is not usually in use between the hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, when the majority of auto thefts occur. In addition, by enrolling in the Watch Your Car Program, vehicle owners also authorize law enforcement officials to stop their vehicle at any time during the day or night within one mile of the border, if there is a suspicion that the vehicle is being illegally operated.

If a police officer witnesses the vehicle in operation between these hours, they have the right to stop the vehicle and verify it is being legally operated by the rightful owner.

To register for the program online go to: https://www.aata.state.az.us/Watch_Your_Car/Info_Request/signup_request.html

Register by mail by downloading the form at: http://www.azwatchyourcar.com/pdfs/WYC%20-%20application%20form%20for%20website.pdf  Print it, fill it out and mail back.
