UA Library staff running to save lives!

We (Gabriela Lopez and Amy Verheide) staff members of the University of Arizona Libraries are writing to you with a very special request. We are participating in a great opportunity to help save lives for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through Team In Training.  We will be running the Nike Women’s Half-Marathon in San Francisco on Oct. 22nd this year.

As part of our commitment to running, we are also fund raising on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Since the UA Campus Community takes part in numerous efforts toward the cause, we are hoping you will support us, if we could just get the word out. Our fund raising goal is for each of us to raise $3,500 by July 20th.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Mission works to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Your contribution will directly support research, patient aid, advocacy, education, and community services. The research done by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society also helps with the research of many other diseases and cancers. A portion of the funds we raise will directly support the patient aid of leukemia and lymphoma patients here in Tucson, AZ.

Please help us support this great cause by contributing generously to our fund raising goal. All donations are 100% tax-deductible and donations can be done easily by going to our very own secure websites.  For Gabriela Lopez http://www.active.com/donate/tntdms/gabylopez
For Amy Verheide http://www.active.com/donate/tntdms/Amy_In_Action

If you would like us to wear the name of a family/friend on our shirt’s during the race, please forward it to us and we will gladly do so.  If you wish to contribute by check or cash, please email us directly.  For Gabriela Lopez: lopezg@u.library.arizona.edu or Amy Verheide: verheidea@u.library.arizona.edu

You are helping save lives.... one dollar at a time.

We need your help during Wildcat Welcome 2006

Please mark your calendars now and plan to assist students and their parents at any of the events described below.  This is a great opportunity to welcome students and say through our actions that we really ARE glad they're here. Although we will be retired before Wildcat Welcome 2006 takes place, we hope you and your staff will support the program by volunteering some time for new and returning students.

As you probably know, Wildcat Welcome is a program that provides a variety of fun-filled, free or minimal-cost activities for new and returning students to welcome them to campus.  Now in its ninth years, Wildcat Welcome is scheduled for August 16-25 this year.  We need volunteers for two major Wildcat Welcome components:  the residence hall move-in (August 16-17), and the "Ask Me" booths that will be strategically located around campus to provide directions and assistance to students (August 16-22).  If you are willing and able to participate, please call or email Juliette Moore at 621-8707 or juliette@u.arizona.edu to request a registration form.  If you prefer, you may also obtain a registration form online at http://www.union.arizona.edu/welcome/index.php.  Feel free to sign up for more than one event and/or more than one time block.

Volunteers will receive a confirmation of their registration during the first week of August.  Volunteer training sessions for all programs listed above are scheduled for Friday, August 4, 3:30-5:00 pm, and Tuesday, August 8, 8:30-10:00 am.  Feel free to attend either training session.  Both sessions will be held in the Student Union Kiva, and no advance registration is necessary for the training.  All Wildcat Welcome volunteers will receive free t-shirts.  Move-in participants who have handcarts available in their offices are asked to bring them for use during the move-in activities.

We know that first impressions often are lasting impressions.  Wildcat Welcome allows volunteers the opportunity to let new students and their parents see that the University of Arizona's administration, faculty, and staff really DO care about them and that we're willing to help-even with such practical realities as settling in.  What a great message about life at the University of Arizona!  Last year we had, for the eighth year in a row, over 200 people volunteer for the move-in event, and about 200 for the "Ask Me" Program.  Let's exceed those numbers this year!

2006 UA Day of Caring project seeks skilled crew leaders!

We are delighted to announce our 2006 Day of Caring project with the Community Food Bank. The event will take place on Saturday, October 7, at the Punch Woods Multi Service Center and home of the Community Food Bank. A wide variety of tasks await us.  Ranging from painting murals and decorating pick up trucks, to building educational signage for the vegetable gardens, to renovating the volunteer break room, to packing food boxes. As in the past, we are seeking members of the campus community who have relevant skills to lead small groups of volunteers. Below is a list of our preliminary leadership needs. General volunteer registration for Day of Caring will be available through our website in mid-August.

The Day of Caring planning team will procure the materials for all projects. We will expect leaders to submit materials needs several weeks prior to the event.

Don't be afraid to encourage your colleagues, friends, and family members who would be good leaders to give us a call. From past experience we know that our crew leaders are the very best!

Thank you kindly for your support. Please call Holly Altman at 626-4671 or Glory Novak at 621-5148 if you would like to lead a crew or if you have any questions.

Curb Auto Theft with the Watch Your Car Program:
It's Quick, Easy and FREE!

The Watch Your Car decal program is a free, voluntary program that vehicle owners enroll their vehicles with the Arizona Automobile Theft Authority. The vehicle is then entered into the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) database and participants receive decals for their front and rear windows. By displaying the decals, vehicle owners convey to law enforcement officials that their vehicle is not usually in use between the hours of 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM, when the majority of auto thefts occur. In addition, by enrolling in the Watch Your Car Program, vehicle owners also authorize law enforcement officials to stop their vehicle at any time during the day or night within one mile of the border, if there is a suspicion that the vehicle is being illegally operated.

If a police officer witnesses the vehicle in operation between these hours, they have the right to stop the vehicle and verify it is being legally operated by the rightful owner.

To register for the program online go to: https://www.aata.state.az.us/Watch_Your_Car/Info_Request/signup_request.html

Register by mail by downloading the form at: http://www.azwatchyourcar.com/pdfs/WYC%20-%20application%20form%20for%20website.pdf  Print it, fill it out and mail back.
