Nominate Someone for an
Award for Excellence by 2/10/06
Take a look around you. You recognize people who are
dedicated to the University, who are always ready to help, and who
make the University a great place to work. Now, take a moment and
nominate those people for an Award for Excellence so that the rest
of the University can appreciate them also.
University Staff Awards for
Excellence will be presented to approximately 11 members of the
Classified Staff and the Academic Professional Staff, regardless of
their length of service, classification or pay grade. These awards
are designed to recognize outstanding achievement. Nominations are
evaluated respectively within three paygrade levels: 1-15, 21-33,
and 40+ to ensure an equal distribution of awards among employees at
all levels. Individuals nominated must be benefits eligible.
The Billy Joe Varney Award for
Excellence will be presented to one employee, with at least 15
cumulative years of employment at the University, who merits special
recognition for a career of dedicated service to the University, its
employees, and the community. Nominees can be chosen from any
employment category. Individuals nominated must be benefits
eligible.
The University Team Award for
Excellence will be presented to a team primarily comprised of
Classified Staff and/or Appointed Personnel. Team members should
have complementary skills, be committed to a common purpose and
share specific performance goals. They should also have established
means by which to hold themselves mutually accountable.
A Team shall be defined as three or more
benefits eligible employees, regardless of their length of service.
The award will be presented in recognition of the team’s outstanding
contribution to its unit, department, or University as a whole.
The University Department Award for
Excellence will be presented to a single
department in recognition of its outstanding departmental excellence
in the management of its people and resources. Nominations should
include specific examples of exemplary performance in the criteria
themes outlined below. Judges will look for the degree to which
departments meet and/or exceed the selection criteria. The
department selected by the judges to receive the University of
Arizona Department Award for Excellence will receive a commemorative
plaque
All of these honors, with the
exception of the Department Award for Excellence, carry with
them a university-funded monetary award and, therefore, must be
based on achievements in activities beyond normal duties. For myself
and on behalf of the organizations supporting this recognition, I
encourage you to nominate employees in your area who you feel are
making outstanding contributions to the University. Go to
nomination forms. To assist you with your nominations, a list of
criteria is included.
Awards for Excellence nominations must be received not later than
4 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2006
Questions should be directed to the
co-chairs of the UA/SAC Awards for Excellence Team; Anne Lopez,

Discovering and Challenging Our Values and Cultural
Belief Systems SU, South Ballroom
The campus community’s response to diversity has
implications for student retention, employee satisfaction
and morale, and the quality of services we provide to
students. One of the most crucial diversity issues of
our time is the development of cultural competency skills.
Cultural competence is never a fully attained state, but
continues to develop throughout an individual’s lifetime.
Addressing unresolved issues and concerns that exist
in a diverse campus community are essential to
working in a harmonious atmosphere. Since conflicts
occur at all levels in a University community, the
President’s Office Ombuds Program and the Diversity
Resource Office are pleased to present this
educational opportunity to the
campus community.
“Discovering and Challenging Our Values and Cultural
Belief Systems” will be presented by Viki C. Sharp,
M.Ed. Viki is internationally renowned for training
and consultingservices in crisis intervention,
communication and victimology.
http://ombuds.web.arizona.edu/sharpbio.html
Viki’s workshop will provide the opportunity to
explore personal values, belief systems, cultural
influences and their impact on interpersonal
communication. A cornerstone of cultural competency
is understanding the influence of culture
on your communication style. Through various
experiential strategies, participants will increase
awareness
of their own biases and opinions. The influence of
family, friends, school, religion, culture and life
experiences will be addressed. The cycle of
oppression and hate crimes
will also be discussed.
In the Spring of 2005, Viki presented a highly
successful workshop to the UA campus community,
titled, “The ABC’s of Problem Resolution.” We are
very pleased that Viki is back by popular demand to
present another fast-paced, interactive workshop.
The workshop is free and seating is limited.
Please register on-line at
http://dro.ltc.arizona.edu/ by February 15,
2006. If you have questions regarding this workshop,
please contact Claudia D’Albini, Director of the UA
Ombuds Program, 626-5589,
dalbinic@u.arizona.edu, or
Katherine Ackermann, Diversity Resource Office,
626-5502, dro@email.arizona.edu

Emily Krauz
Applications Due -
Due by 5pm on 3/10/05
The Emily Krauz Staff Endowment Scholarship is open to any benefits-eligible
UA classified staff member. The purpose of the fund is to encourage and support
UA career staff members towards their career advancement and/or education. This scholarship can be applied towards educational expenses such as
registration costs, books and supplies. Class registration may be at the UA,
including correspondence courses, or Pima Community College. Awards are presented twice a year and average about $150.00 to each
recipient. The total amount awarded every fall and spring is about $1,000.00.
Due to the large number of applicants, not all will receive an award. Recipients
and amounts awarded to each are chosen by an independent selection committee
from those who have applied during the preceding months to June and November.
Scholarship recipients are reimbursed for their expenses AFTER they turn in
their receipts, up to the amount of the award.
SAC gladly welcomes contributions to the Endowment fund. If you or your
organization would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the Emily Krauz
Endowment or for more information on the Emily Krauz Endowment contact Anne
Lopez, scholarship chair.

Staff Council Seeks
Active Members
Classified
staff members who want to be more involved in University
processes and maintain a venue for their opinions to be
heard are invited to apply or make nominations for
membership to the Staff Advisory Council. New members will
be appointed to 3-year terms.
The council provides a forum for discussing issues related
to staff as a resource for many on- and off-campus inquiring
groups. In the past year, SAC has had representatives
address the council from UA Human Resources, Parking and
Transportation, the UA Web Council, Ombuds Program,
Strategic Planning and Budget Committee, UA provost and
state legislators and liaisons. The council in turn makes
recommendations on existing and proposed University policies
and procedures to ensure classified staff members are
considered and included in the processes.
In addition, the council has several subcommittees that
organize fund-raising activities, create networking
opportunities and camaraderie among staff and other UA
groups, recognize outstanding employees, manage a
scholarship endowment that benefits staff members who choose
to further their education, and advocates for legislative
activities that support the UA and classified staff.
Nominations are being accepted on the Staff
Advisory Council Web site under the Membership
Application heading. Nominees must be non-probationary
classified staff employees who are energetic, conscientious,
and concerned with staff issues. Each must be willing to
commit eight hours a month to SAC activities.
Contact Anne Lopez
for more information.
