A Season For Giving: Sad Time for
Some Seniors (Tucson Citizen)
The holidays can be the loneliest time of the year for some seniors.
Living on a fixed income far from family and friends can make the
season bleak. Tucsonan R.J. Williams counts himself as one of
the lucky ones. The blind, widowed 87-year-old World War II
veteran will spend Christmas morning worshipping at church, and he
plans to share a holiday meal with his daughter. But Williams
said the season can be melancholy for seniors. "I think it's
really tough on people without children and friends. Some older
folks really get overlooked."
Tucson agencies are working to bring joy to seniors this holiday.
The Home Instead Senior Care agency is looking for "angels" to
provide gifts for isolated seniors. "A kindness like this
provides an opportunity for seniors to realize they are not a
discarded generation," said Scott Ehrsam, owner of Home Instead,
which provides services to elderly Tucsonans.
Doris Goldstein, director of public relations at the Pima Council on
Aging, said holidays can be depressing for older Tucsonans.
"They have memories of times when they did have family around, and
so often they don't do anything for the holidays," she said.
Goldstein encourages Tucsonans to invite older friends home for
dinner. "All emphasis is on the closeness of family, and if
you don't have that, it can be very sad," said David Chandler of the
Volunteer Center of Southern Arizona. "People can desperately long
for times when family was close and life was vibrant."
Spending time with an older Tucsonan can bring cheer, Chandler said.
"It can be a powerful way to banish holiday loneliness."

Training Grant Writing Workshop Dec 12: 9-11am SU Rincon Room
The Office of the Vice President for
Research, Graduate Studies, and Economic Development
announces a workshop on writing successful training
grant proposals to be held on: Training grants
provide significant funds for graduate student and
post-doctoral training and research, and at the same
time strengthen the academic reputation of programs and
departments. Recent discussions have indicated clearly
that the University of Arizona will likely increase its
success in obtaining NIH Training Grants if more
programs and departments apply. To facilitate this
process, the VPR's Office, in collaboration with several
GIDP groups who have already competed successfully in
this area, is offering a workshop for faculty and staff
on the writing of NIH National Research Service Award
Institutional Research Training Grant (T32) proposals.
The Training Grant Workshop will cover important aspects
of proposal preparation. Reserve seating by
12/5/05 through the GIDP Office at
gidp@email.arizona.edu or 621-8368.

Volunteer in the New Year with
Hospice Family Care!
Next
training class starts January 19, 2006…it’s FREE!
Hospice Family Care
volunteers are people who are trained to provide
companionship and assistance to terminally ill people
and their families. They come from all walks of life
and generously offer their time to people in need.
Patients are at home or are in skilled care facilities.
Our philosophy reflects a strong emphasis on quality of
life in the end stages of life. The next volunteer
training begins Thursday, Thursday, January 19 from
5:30p-9:30p. The class runs six consecutive Thursdays
at our office near Speedway and Wilmot. Upon
”graduation” you determine the number of hours you wish
to volunteer.
Volunteering for Hospice
Family Care does not require a lot of time; all you need
is compassion and the willingness to share the time you
have with people who can benefit from your
companionship. Volunteering is fun. Some volunteers
take patients shopping, others play cards and games or
share their musical talents. Frequently volunteers
provide a much needed break for the caregiver at home
with the patient. We also need volunteers to help with
office work and telephone support.
Four times per year, Hospice
Family Care conducts free Hospice Volunteer training
classes. Training is one time per week for six weeks
and is held at our offices near El Dorado Hospital.
There is no cost for training materials. Some topics
covered during training include communication skills,
spiritual dynamics of death and dying, caring for the
caregiver, bereavement, hospice social service issues,
and many more.

Staff Council Seeks
Active Members
Classified
staff members who want to be more involved in University
processes and maintain a venue for their opinions to be
heard are invited to apply or make nominations for
membership to the Staff Advisory Council. New members will
be appointed to 3-year terms.
The council provides a forum for discussing issues related
to staff as a resource for many on- and off-campus inquiring
groups. In the past year, SAC has had representatives
address the council from UA Human Resources, Parking and
Transportation, the UA Web Council, Ombuds Program,
Strategic Planning and Budget Committee, UA provost and
state legislators and liaisons. The council in turn makes
recommendations on existing and proposed University policies
and procedures to ensure classified staff members are
considered and included in the processes.
In addition, the council has several subcommittees that
organize fund-raising activities, create networking
opportunities and camaraderie among staff and other UA
groups, recognize outstanding employees, manage a
scholarship endowment that benefits staff members who choose
to further their education, and advocates for legislative
activities that support the UA and classified staff.
Nominations are being accepted on the Staff
Advisory Council Web site under the Membership
Application heading. Nominees must be non-probationary
classified staff employees who are energetic, conscientious,
and concerned with staff issues. Each must be willing to
commit eight hours a month to SAC activities.
Contact Anne Lopez
for more information.
