Guest Speaker 1: Ronald Wycosk, Commission on the Status of Women

Ronald attended the meeting to discuss the Family Care Workgroup and ask our support in their efforts to obtain funds for an outdoor play area on campus for children ages 2-12. To date, they have received donations of $10,000 to fund the project (from the support of President Shelton and other administrators on campus). The total cost will be approximately $17,000. The potential site for the play area would be the grassy area between the Education and Psychology buildings. The total cost of the project includes all of the site work to install a child safe surface and then purchase and install the playgroup equipment on that space. Donators will receive their name on a plaque that will be displayed in the area. If you have any questions about the scope of the project, please call Ray Gasser, Chair of the Family Care Workgroup at 626-3047.

Guest Speaker 2: Holly Altman, Office of Community Relations, Outreach Coordinator

Holly explained a little about the Office of Community Relations and their four major campaigns for the year: UA Cares, UA4Food, Cats in the Community Day (formerly known as Day of Caring), and Daughters on Campus Day. The Office of Community Relations is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with various individuals and groups within the Southern Arizona community and beyond, and provides charitable support for the local community through several campus wide community outreach programs.

UA Cares is the University of Arizona’s workplace giving campaign, offering UA employees the opportunity to donate to any University program or service through the UA Foundation, and to any non-profit agency or Community Impact Area through the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona. The campaign begins in October usually and runs through December. Visit www.uacares.arizona.edu for more information.

UA4Food is an annual food drive, bringing together faculty, staff and student groups to raise awareness, food and the money to buy food for the Community Food Bank. The program runs from February through April and includes a wide variety of events and activities. Visit www.ua4food.arizona.edu for more information.

Cats in the Community Day (formerly known as Day of Caring) occurs in March. University faculty, staff and students join their hands and hearts by volunteering on a Saturday to help with a community project. Visit www.catsincommunity.arizona.edu for more information.

Daughters on Campus Day is a day to introduce underrepresented young women to campus life, offer information on admissions and financial aid, and provide inspiration and the understand that college is a viable option for them. This event usually occurs in April.
