SAC members off to Phoenix

SAC Tour & UA Pride Nite

SAC members Grace Aranda, Eva Gonzales and Claire Tapia made the trip to Phoenix on February 5 to meet with Representative Jennifer Burns and discuss UA staff concerns on the budget and other southern Arizona issues.

Jennifer J. Burns

Jennifer J. Burns is serving her third term as an Arizona State Representative. She is a native of Arizona and a resident of Avra Valley (west of Tucson and south of Marana). Jennifer is a graduate of Marana High School and the University of Arizona. She has experience at the federal, state, county and city levels of government.  Jennifer works to be a part of the communities in her district by being involved in as many activities and community events as possible throughout District 25.

We are thankful Representative Burns took the time out of her busy day to meet with us and share her viewpoint.

While at the Arizona State Capitol SAC members took part in an educational tour of the capitol museum.  We were surprised to see that there is a visiting exhibit coming on the UofA's Phoenix Mars Mission Spacecraft:

Up from the Ashes: Phoenix Goes to Mars Exhibit

Up from the Ashes:  Phoenix Goes to Mars
Open February 14, 2008 through Fall 2008

The University of Arizona, one of Arizona’s publicly funded universities, is at the forefront of space exploration. Their Phoenix Mars Mission spacecraft and instruments were adapted from two unsuccessful attempts to explore Mars. It was therefore appropriate to name the mission for the Phoenix, a mythical bird that is reborn from the ashes of its own fiery death.

We were impressed with the knowledge of our tour guide and thankful she took the time to show us the wonders of our history in particular the USS Arizona & the early House of Representatives.

USS Arizona Exhibit
Flagship of the Fleet:  Life and Death of the USS Arizona

The most common image of the Arizona is of the ship in flames at Pearl Harbor.  This exhibit tells the rest of the story, its focus is personal.  Using rare artifacts and photographs, it tells the story of the men. The exhibit brings the history of the ship up to date with film footage documenting the research that has been conducted on the ship since the 1980s.

The House met within the old Arizona State Capitol chamber from 1901 to 1960.

We then proceeded on to the Wyndom Hotel for the Pride Nite Festivities.  It was a great opportunity to see what the different areas of the university have been up to and to promote the many accomplishments to our legislature and the Governors office.

UA Pride Night

To introduce and promote the University of Arizona’s diverse family and extensive resources to Arizona’s legislators and promote the Legislative Advocacy program - AdvoCATS - to the University of Arizona family.

MEET. LEARN. SHARE.

We had a great time and hope to see more of you at this important event next year!
