Faculty Senate Meeting Notes

12/3/07

Session was called to order by Chair Mitchell.

Representative Dr. Silverman presented his notes on how minorities and women are low on totem pole.  Numbers do not bode well for UA.  Dr. Wanda Howell ask that he give a copy of his report to the Senate. 

John Engel/ASUA reported they are working on Tuition fees reduction and Teacher Course Evaluation information to be made available to students 

Catherine Neish/ President of GPSC reported on the letter endorsed by Faculty Senate in aiding help for childcare facilities.  Meliss Vito will chair group in gathering information on site and cost..  They are also working on raising salary for graduate assistants. 

Faculty Report by Dr. Mitchell:  Meeting location will be held at College Law, Room 146, third Monday in January. 

Provost Sanders spoke on:

  • 20/20 plan
  • Tuition planning
  • Childcare facility committee – Vito to chair
  • Searches being conducted, VP for Instruction, Public Health, new dean for College of Nursing.

President Shelton

  • Has been working closely with Neish Burce and Engel on tuition fees.  Praised their work.
  • Strategic plan
  • Working on budget with governor – will continue focusing on people, enrollment growth, utilities, library needs, salary adjustments.  Governor intends to protect education from cuts this year.
  • Radiology faculty as group negotiated salaries and support.

  • ICPC non-consent item:  Name change of Continuing Education and Academic Outreach to Arizona Outreach College
  • Information Item:  Report from Senate Task Force on Student Retention and Advancement (Dr. Strittmatter out of town)

  • First reading and possible action:  Approval of Policy for Management of Personal Conflicts of Interest

UA Five-Year Strategic Plan 2009-2013  report was distributed to Senate.  Copy available for review.

Reports:

  • ASUA President – Tommy introduced himself
  • GPSC President– Katheryn Nich spoke on student helath plan,, grossroot level – getting student involved with lobbying legistlature and just getting involved
  • Faculty Officers – Dr. Mitchell : scheduling meeting times were provided, location will be changed due to renovations on the building, commencement to be discussed on changing dates that conflict with finals.  Presented Provost George Davis with a parting gift from the Faculty Senate.
  • Provost Davis report on proposals for Faculty Recruitment
  • President Shelton:  Thanked Dr. Davis for his service as provost.  Search committee is active for Provost position.  Gave a budget cut summary.  Finalist for Alumni prospects are being reviewed.  Asked for Commencement speaker-needs ideas on stellar speakers for May 08.  Rio Nuevo – states we will not have a long term debt for us.  Asking City to help.
  • Thanked the faculty for their guidance, communication and many discussions.

Voting was held on several positions on Faculty Senate. 

Report from Senate Intercollegiate Represtive S. Green

  • NCAA Peer Review is to be conducted soon.  Nov 6-8 visit to see if we aare compliance with regulations.

Committee of 11 resolution on the UA general Education Curriculum by J.D. Garcia: asked for discussion on hearing concerns overall quality and deliverance assessments.  What is being delivered and what is being learned.

The Shared Governance Memorandum of Understanding, "Guidelines for Shared Governance." was signed at the meeting.  This form was signed by:  President Shelton, Provost Davis, Chair Wanda Howell, Vice Chair Robert Mitchell.
 
The Statement on Restroom Access was distributed.  Those using the facilities must identify with gender of the facility.
 
Announcements made:
  • Presidential Inauguration will be held Oct 26 3-5 pm
  • Faculty Farewell Reception for Peter Likins was rescheduled to Nov. 6 (after meeting)
  •  Retiree's Association reported several upcoming events: 
  1. Oct 12 /7pm in KIVA rm, Paul Matson will speak on the current status of the ASRS and plans for the future.;  
  2. Oct 21:  Saturday, luncheon at Skyline Country Club / $22 per person. Reservations call Fenita King   885-0101.
 
Erin Hertzog/ASUA President reports:
  • Dates to remember:  October 10:  Gubernatorial Debate will be held at 2m in the South Ballroom;  November 7:  Election Day!  Free personal shuttles to the pools.  8-5pm from Old Main Roundabout.
  • Wireless Internet is finally available on campus.  UAWiFi has been installed in a number of high-traffic areas including the main library, science and engineering library, student union, Park Student Union, Bookstore, College of Law, the Music building and even part of the Mall.  To use this system you need you UA NetID.      For more information go to:  www.uawireless.arizona.edu
