DUAL MA in Near Eastern Studies and Journalism

Master of Arts fields of emphasis include Middle Eastern languages (Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew), cultures, history and politics of the Islamic Middle East.  Two tracks are available in the MA program: (1) A pre-doctoral track, requiring three years of a Middle Eastern language and a thesis; and (2) A pre-professional track, requiring two years of a Middle Eastern language and a final departmental paper.

Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Studies

Students applying for admission into the Ph.D. program in Near Eastern Studies are normally expected to have completed a BA or MA in Near or Middle Eastern Studies.  However, students with degrees in related fields demonstrating substantial and outstanding coursework in Near Eastern Studies are also encouraged to apply.

Concentrations at the doctoral level are available in the fields of: 

- Critical Studies in Modern Middle Eastern Culture and Society
- Islamic Studies
- Linguistics of Middle Eastern Languages
- Middle Eastern Literatures (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish)

Students must apply to and be accepted into each program to qualify for admission into the Dual Ph.D. Degree program in Anthropology and Near Eastern Studies.  This program attracts the best students in both fields to a unique opportunity to combine comparative and theoretical breadth with linguistic and textual depth, while developing critical research methods.   

NES Requirements:  27 units
Anthropology Requirements:  27 units
Additional Requirements:  27 units (shared)
Dissertation:  24 units (shared)
