Houshang Pourshariati Iranian Studies Book Award

The Houshang Pourshariati Iranian Studies Book Award in Iranian Studies was established in 2005 to recognize outstanding publishing in Iranian studies. The award was named for Houshang Pourshariati to recognize his long and distinguished career as a journalist and writer. Announced at the Awards Ceremony at MESA’s annual meeting, the Houshang Pourshariati Iranian Studies Book Award recognizes Iranian studies scholarship.

The Houshang Pourshariati Iranian Studies Book Award

The Houshang Pourshariati Iranian Studies Book Award and a prize of $2,000 will be presented annually to a single recipient determined by a three-person committee of Iranian studies scholars selected by the MESA Board of Directors.

  • Books must be non-fiction scholarly monographs based on original research published in English* between May 1, 2005, and April 30, 2006. *Works translated from other languages into English will also be considered, but will be judged by the same rigorous standards as those for works submitted in English. Authors need not be members of MESA.
  • Subject matter must deal with Iran and the work must seek to advance knowledge and scholarship on Iran and Iranian culture and history, and its expression in literature, philosophy, art and science from ancient times to the present. The purview of these works therefore should be clearly that of an Iranist.
  • Works not eligible include edited collections and compilations, proceedings of symposia, new editions of previously published books, bibliographies, dictionaries, and textbooks.
  • Nominations must be received at the Secretariat by May 1, 2006, with books delivered to the readers by May 11, 2006, (or equivalent dates in following years) or books will not be eligible for the competition.
  • The author of the single winning book will receive $2000 and a certificate of award. Honorable mentions will also receive a certificate of award. Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony at MESA annual meetings.
