An eight-week summer program providing intensive study in Arabic language and culture from the beginner through the intermediate level. During the first half of the course, students learn the Arabic script, the basic rules of Arabic grammar, appropriate vocabulary, as well as reading, oral, and aural skills commensurate with the elementary level. The second part of the class explores advanced structures of grammar, syntax, and expression. All courses take place on Drew University’s scenic campus, located just 30 miles from New York City.

Each Friday, students will participate in cultural activities in New York City or New Jersey related to the Arabic language. The activities will include tours of immigrant neighborhoods, visits to art exhibitions and mosques, film screenings, musical performances, Arabic food tasting, and other events to be announced.

This 12 credit program is open to advanced high school students, undergraduates, graduate students, working professionals, and adult learners. Students who have completed beginner-level Arabic studies are welcome to join at the mid-point of the program.

Summer Program at The Ohio State University

Intensive instruction in both elementary and intermediate Persian and Turkish and elementary Pashto. The emphasis in all courses will be on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each course will provide up to 15 quarter hours of graded undergraduate credit.

Some financial aid will be available from the consortium to qualified applicants in addition, Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships and other sources of financial support may also be applied. Consortium applicants who are graduate or professional students may apply for a Summer 2006 FLAS Fellowships from Ohio State’s Middle East Studies Center (Application deadline: February 3, 2006). This is an introductory course covering the spoken and written Kurdish of Sulaimania, Iraq, covering the elements of phonology, grammatical structures, vocabulary and the writing system. Students who complete the course will be able to converse on a general level with speakers of the Sorani dialect of Kurdish and to read non-technical prose.

History of the Middle East: Ottoman Empire as a Bridge Between East and West


Istanbul, Turkey: Built by the Roman Emperor Constantine in the 4th century, conquered for the Ottomans by Mehmed the Conqueror in the 15th century Istanbul served for many centuries as the capital of the Ottoman Empire until its collapse after WWI. Divided by the beautiful Bosphorus in the middle Between Europe and Asia, Istanbul offers a unique opportunity of history in a modern urban setting.  Istanbul is one of the most beautiful sites of Turkey where modern life and historical presence intermingle in the alleys and neighborhoods of the city. With its rich historical legacy and vibrant urban environment, Istanbul has also been the center of education and research in Turkey.

 Program Information
In the Birthplace of the Ottoman Empire, Anatolia of today’s Turkey, this three-week intensive course will examine within the context of Islamic Civilization and the History of the Modern Middle East, the history and civilization of the Ottoman Empire from its origins in the late 13th century Anatolia up to its collapse after the WWI. We will trace how obscure band of warriors in western Anatolia evolved into the rulers of a formidable political and geographical power at the gates of Vienna in the 16th century and patrons of a complex culture and civilization claiming to combine the legacy of the east and the west. In addition to its political history, which impacted both East and West until the 20th century, particular emphasis will be given to cultural, social, economic aspects of the Ottomans to understand their evolution as both Middle eastern and European Empire, whose evolution makes it a key bridge between the east and the west.

The host institution, Sabanci University, with its state of the art campus has become one of the premier universities in Turkey. With its admirable educational and scholarly strength and integrity, it attracts the top 1% of the students in Turkey. The medium of Instruction at the university is English. Course Information
Students will earn 6 credit hours from Saint Louis University from the following programs: History and International Relations. This course will fulfill Saint Louis University’s cultural diversity requirement. The Saint Louis University International Center arranges course registration prior to departure. Graduate students only may take the course for either three or six credit hours. Requirements will differ depending on the level and credit hours selected.

Faculty
Course will be taught in English by Hayrettin Yucesoy, Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern History at Saint Louis University. Professor Yucesoy is a native of Turkey and has a PhD in Middle Eastern History from the University of Chicago, M.A. in Islamic History from University of Jordan and BA from Istanbul University. In addition to the main instructor, guest lecturers from Turkey will deliver lectures on pertinent subjects.

Field Trips
Many of the classes will be held in designated locations in actual historical sites, such as Ottoman palaces, archives, libraries, historical colleges and mosques. Field trips will include major historical sites of the Ottoman Empire outside of Istanbul in Anatolian heartland. This course will offer invaluable hands-on experience of the historical and cultural landscape of the Ottoman political, geographical and cultural heritage.

Housing
Participants will stay in double-occupancy state of the art student dormitories on Sabanci University’s campus in suburban Istanbul. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners may be taken at the student/faculty dining hall, and other meals may be purchased at neighborhood restaurants and shops.

Eligibility
This course is geared toward undergraduate and graduate students who would like to have a solid introduction to the history, culture and civilization of the Ottoman Empire, medieval Islam and Modern Islamic Middle East. Class requirements will differ for graduate and undergraduate students. In order to be considered for admissions, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Undergraduate Juniors or Seniors, or Graduate Student (Sophomores are encouraged to apply and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis)
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Good disciplinary standing
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • No Turkey/Turkish experience needed.

UW-Madison Global Studies, in partnership with the Dept. of African Languages & Literature and the Dept. of Languages & Cultures of Asia, with support from the College of Letters & Science and Middle East Studies, is pleased to announce the Arabic and Persian Immersion Program (APIP) taking place at our sister campus, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. APIP creates an intensive language learning environment in which participants communicate in only Arabic or Persian during the entire length of the eight-week course. This summer has five course offerings: Elementary, Intermediate & Advanced Arabic; and  Elementary and Intermediate Persian. Each course is equivalent to one year of language study in a normal university setting and will offer eight semester credits. Open to both UW and non-UW students, as well as professionals.
