Approximately 10 cadets per year group major in Middle East Area Studies, most of whom also complete the minor in Arabic language.
However, over 60 freshman are enrolled in Arabic language instruction each year, making the Air Force Academy one of the largest Arabic language programs in the United States.
Degree Requirements
BS: 154 semester hours are required for graduation.
112 semester hours of required core courses are taken by all cadets (USAF Academy core is a blend of technical and social sciences as well as physical education and aviation sciences courses determined
as essential to the background of an Air force Officer). An additional 42 semester hours of major courses from foreign languages, history, political science, law, economics, military arts and sciences, and
geography, tailored to the Middle East Area Studies major, are required.
Concentration options are available in History, Political Science, Law, and Military Operations and Strategy.
Special Features
Each summer selected cadets participate in an Arabic language immersion program in Jordan, which includes a military visit to the King Hussein Air College.
Air Force Academy exchange trips to Egypt and Turkey are also available during spring break each year.
Moreover, 8-10 cadets spend 3 weeks in Israel each summer participating in a study visit sponsored by the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs.
Occasional summer opportunities to travel to Syria, Kuwait and Morocco are also available.
Additionally, the USAF academy Middle Studies Group (MESG) sponsors monthly lectures on subjects of contemporary interest, and every third year, the MESG hosts the Rocky Mountain Model Arab League
sponsored by the National Council on US-Arab Relations.
