Courses
The department offers more than 30 courses a year at the levels of undergraduate
and graduate studies.
The courses consist of introductory general courses, advanced specialized
courses, seminars, and special graduate courses.
About one third of the courses concentrate on medieval Islam (religion and
history), while the rest of the courses focus on the history of the modern
Middle East (19th century to the present).
The students are required to learn 16, 30, or 46 yearly hours, in accordance
with the intensity of their studies (minor, major, or intensive), which are
divided over three years. In addition to their studies in the department, the
students are also required to learn 10 to
14 yearly hours of language studies in the Department of Arabic. Graduate
students are also required to learn Persian or Turkish.

Spano-Oriental Studies Program
Courses
The courses offer students an opportunity to choose a varied interdisciplinary program
in fields of interest with the guidance of advisors of the program. The curriculum is
based on a combination of four study units. They consist of:

Special Features
Aside from the formal courses of study, the program offers lectures and seminars on
subjects related to Oriental Jewry.
Additional Information
The purpose of the program is to inculcate a broad and varied understanding of the culture
of Oriental Jewry in the past and present. It is also a focal point for potential research
projects concerning Oriental Jewish culture. The program is part of the Department of
Jewish History which is responsible for the curriculum and all required organizational
services for the student.
