| "The New
Paradigm in the Middle East"
A dramatic realignment of new
alliances is being forged in the Middle East. Historically, conflict in
the Middle East was defined by the struggle between Israel and the Arab
world. Today, a new conflict has emerged between pragmatic moderates and
fanatical extremists. Set against the backdrop of bourgeoning extremism,
how can we face the threats while at the same time infuse hope, and
identify the moderate forces seeking to cultivate peace and stability in
the region? Consul General Tamir will address these questions and
explore how hew initiatives may provide opportunities for progress in
the quest for peace in the region.
Consul General Tamir is Israel’s
highest-ranking diplomat in New England. He received a Masters Degree in
Public Administration from Harvard University in 2004 and was a Wexner
Israel Fellow at Harvard’s John F.
Kennedy School of Government. He joined Israel’s Ministry of Foreign
Affairs in 1993. He has served as the Policy Assistant to Foreign
Ministers Shimon
Peres, Ehud Barak,
and
David Levy. In 1997 he was promoted to the position of Political
Officer at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. In this position he
worked closely with the US State Department and the National Security
Council. He developed a specialty in US-Israeli relations, and in 2001
he was appointed to the position of Advisor to the Director General at
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem.
