This course examines the history of the idea of "the West" from its
beginnings in ancient times through the birth of Christianity and the
evolution of the largely Christian "western" world. It also looks
closely at the notion of "Israel" from the very dawn of Jewish history,
and the interaction of that notion with western history and with Islamic
history. Finally, it looks specifically at interactions between
and among Jews, Christians and Moslems from the birth of each of theses
people to contemporary times, including Jews and Christians living in
Moslem lands and Muslims living in Jewish and/or Christian lands. |
