This course describes and analyzes Nazi policy toward the Jews from the time of Hitler’s rise to power until the “Final Solution” decision was made. It looks at the interplay between ideology, strategy and politics in Nazi Germany and among the Allies and examines Jewish rescue dilemmas until the bitter end.

This course covers the years 1933 to 1945 and focuses not only on Europe, but also on the United States and Palestine. It looks to historical events, politics and international affairs as they juxtaposed with domestic political perceptions and givens among the allies.
Students will be exposed to documents just now brought to public notice through Prof. Aronson’s research, which is based on recently declassified German, British, American and Zionist records. Prof. Aronson served as consultant to the Inter Agency Working Group in charge of implementing the American Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act. He was also the Scholar in Residence at the United States National Archives.
