JUDAIC STUDIES' HEBREW PROGRAM 
COURSE OBJECTIVES FOR 103B


Reading and reading comprehension:

By the end of the semester, students will be expected to be able to read and comprehend a 60-100 word text consisting of sentences containing paal, piel, and nifal verbs in present and past tense.

Writing:

1. Students will be expected to be able to answer questions pertaining to a given text in writing, using correct grammar, spelling, and syntax.

2. Students will correspond with instructor in the form of "dialog journals." Students will be expected to use vocabulary and grammar commensurate with level of instruction.

3. Student will be expected to write occasional compositions describing a daily situation.

Comprehension and speech:

The following subject matters will be taught:

1. In the restaurant: food vocabulary will be expended

2. The work situation: looking for work, describing what one does on the job.

3. The daily schedule

4. At a party: meeting a partner, the qualities you look for in a partner.

5. A trip to Israel

Students will be expected to be able to converse about these subjects.

Grammar:

1. Verbs: Present and Past Tense

- paal: shlemin, lamed-hey, ain-vav/ain-yud, lamed-aleph
- piel: shlemin
- nifal: shlemin
- hifiil: shlemin
- hitpael: shlemin

2. Paul Form

3. Adjectives and adverbs, expanded

4. Idiomatic expressions

5. Imperative

6. Impersonal sentences expanded

Songs:

Israeli songs will be taught weekly as a vehicle for vocabulary acquisition
